Holy Basil

Holy Basil Holy Basil or tulsi in Indian culture and Kemangi in Malay, it should not be confused with Thai Basil (Ocimum americanum or O. canum), which has an anise-like taste.

Revered in India for thousands of years, the leaf extracts are used in Ayurvedic remedies for common colds, headaches, stomach disorders, inflammation, heart disease, various forms of poisoning, and malaria.

Traditionally, Holy Basil is taken in many forms resh leaf, as a herbal tea, or dried powder. The fresh leaves of Thai Basil are either eaten fresh or used as garnish in curries.

Phyllanthus niruri or Pokok dukung anak in Malay is precious village herb and is traditionally used by Malays to treat jaundice. It is quite common to find this herb among weeds in the garden.

Piper betel or Sirih in Malay, leaves taken with gambir treat diarrhea. As poultice it helps to relieve abdominal pain, coughs and asthma. Leaf sap is applied to soothe oral sores and ulcers.
