Plectranthus barbatus |
Plectranthus barbatus or Coleus indicum is also known as Indian Borage or Cuban Oregano and Daun bangun-bangun in Malay. In the Caribbean the leaves are boiled to make an infusion, which is blended with honey to make a tonic for coughs and colds.
It is said to be an excellent expectorant. The fumes from the crushed leaves are reported to clear stuffy noses. Traditionally, the juice of the leaves is used to treat asthma, chronic coughs, bronchitis, colic, flatulence and rheumatism.
For earaches pour the fresh, pure juice into the ear for 10 minutes. For boils, sprains, and painful swellings, apply the poultice of leaves to the affected area, four times daily. For sore throats, make a decoction of two tablespoons of dried leaves to a pint of boiling water, taken one hour before or after meals. The decoction of leaves is also given after childbirth. |
